The facts are that the current music business for independents has completely leveled the playing field. No matter that you once played with "This Name" or "That Name" doesn't mean that You have a Recognized Name. Having played with or for a Name or a Name Band will open some doors now but it won't open all. You and Your presentation are what will sell you now; kudo's from the past will help but you are your own selling point.

It's almost the same as when I was working at a stables, a person walking up to me and paying their $30. for a 2-hour ride and telling me "I know how to ride; give me a good horse". Sure ya do. Instead of telling me? Show me what you can do. I'll give you a horse that will prove to me that you can either ride or not. They're all good horses, whether they look the part or not - it's your level of expertise that will make that older looking "nag" lift his head and prance ... or not.

You once played with so-and-so but you don't anymore ... every indie now how to eke out his or her own audience and platform and play from and to it. No one is going to get rich anymore - you just gotta love what you do, and keep on keepin' on, choose your favorite kind of venues, wow 'em every time, get paid, sell a few more than a few CDs or download cards, and go home, hoping that the new fans leave your last show humming your music and sharing it with friends so that the next time you're in their hood, the crowd will be larger.

It's being true to yourself and your music and being honest with yourself and your fans. The levels equal the kinds of venues you are accepted to play in and how fast your new music climbs the present popular (Roots 66 and Roots Music Report) charts, without help from a radio promoter. And the smiling happy fans at the end of a show..... And how YOU feel when it's done, without aid of chemical substances. Was it a great show? Will the buzz from your music and that last show carry you through to the next one? Can you make the old nag lift his or her head and prance? That's your criteria. And not who you once played with.....

Alright, this Theme has been nagging at me for a long time.
And our closeness to April 15th and Tax Day was the trigger.
I don’t like what I see going on here- we simply cannot keep spending Money like we are in this Financial Crisis that is far from over.
And I am tired of certain words like Bailouts, Unsustainable and especially Trillion, (who the hell ever even USED Trillion in conversation before a few years ago?).
A Trillion is a Million MILLIONS!
There are so many songs about Money, and others that can apply here, I again do not know how long the series will last.
It all depends on how the muse strikes me. This is free-form radio!
So a musical look at this topic, and I am not doing this Theme entirely all warm and fuzzy, but at times with a definite snarl!

I realize I may make some people uneasy with this series, but I am just expressing my deep concern about our economy.
I fear we will go bankrupt!
If you are a normal, sane person, you would never balance your home budget and spend the way the government has, and is continuing to do.
My own balancing act here is to warn, and at the same time be entertaining with the musical selections.
While the Stock Market has always been a gamble- no sure thing, just like in Horse Racing- the game was never rigged, and some of the biggest risk takers have been the biggest winners.
But due to the reckless actions of some banks and Wall Streeters, there were people who lost everything.
Bernie Madoff anyone?
However, I don’t need and don’t want any more overseeing by some federal agency than is absolutely necessary…in ANY aspect of my life.
The Government and Wall Street will be the targets of my music and my scorn this episode.
So you are invited to join me in mild protest that may grow as we go along.
At least I hope you think the music is good, varied and entertaining.
And hey, listening is free and will not be taxed…yet anyway, lol!

I don’t feel like writing today, and there are Stanley Cup Playoff games to be watched.
After all this time, you know what I do and how I go about it- it is a different way of presenting music.
I have here in this chapter words spoken and music played.
If you listen you’ll get the message, so why write about it, lol?

Here is another chapter on Money and The Financial Crisis from me, self-appointed Pessimism Czar.
There will be an interruption in this series, so I wanted to make sure I got the chance to take a poke at the those repulsive bottomfeeders we call politicians.
This also gives them time to send any agency they want after me- maybe I need some reindoctrination, lol!
Bring it on punks!
There has never been a time when I held politicians in such utter contempt- they have dipped below even lawyers in the scum department.
The music here will reflect my feelings, and maybe yours, maybe not.
But I have always done an honest presentation of Rockollections.
Frankly I am uncomfortable with this on a rock & roll show.
But a Financial Crisis is a Financial Crisis, one that is looming big-time in my opinion, so the honesty from me is still there- and I hope I am wrong about all this.
Big government will bring us economic collapse, it’s as simple as that.
If I can make someone aware or curious about the future, and they take a good long hard look, then all the better.
Hell, I played protest songs in the 60’s, so why not in 2010?

Back to Reality

Good month, good quarter.
So why, a lot of you ask, do I always talk about this economy and these markets and just say, good grief?
Because I’m worried.
I’m happy to see the market up and moving; it’s just that lots of things have me fidgeting and worrying.
I know markets climb a wall of worry, but I’m talking a bigger wall of reality: The reality of spending money we don’t have; blithely assuming we’ll have buyers for all this debt we can’t stop.
I just find it ironic that Boeing was the worst performer among the Dow 30 stocks today, even though it was the best performer for the first three months of the year going into today.
Boeing ending the quarter with a warning: Health care will cost. A lot.
They’re just the latest. There will be more.
Because there will be a reckoning for committing companies to bills they cannot pay, and a society to a tab it cannot afford.
There will be other countries, like China, who say it ain’t worth the fuss holding dollars, so they pull back; and more secret meetings of countries looking for financial alternatives to us, so they will push back.
There is some comfort in knowing as bad as things are here, they are worse out there. So we benefit not because we still don’t stink, but because they stink more.
That is hardly the stuff on which bull markets are built, but these are exactly the markets to which suckers are drawn — convinced that we’ll find a way to pay for all of this. And companies that dare complain are making political hay of this.
I say, enough of this — and back to reality. Not red, or blue: Green. We’re spending it, and we’re losing it.
Just don’t lose sight of the simple reality that what fuels this rally isn’t so much what Barack Obama is doing, but what Ben Bernanke is providing: near zero percent interest rates.
Rates so low, it keeps inflation in check, and investors in clover. Until the bills come due; the folks who help pay them demand more for their trouble, and suddenly they’re not zero. And mortgages aren’t five percent, and the prime pushes higher, and our financial date with destiny comes nearer.
Because hear me when I say that date with destiny is coming.
A date marked by Republicans who let spending get out of control and Democrats who took the reins and let it get out of control more.
A bipartisan blood bath, brought to you by a government that saw it but didn’t tell you, and presented now by a lowly TV anchor, here to say: I warned you.
Have a wonderful day.

Next week, something much lighter, something I have wanted to do for years but I would never realize in time when this particular event was going to happen.
I actually know this year, so I can’t let it pass by without noting it with music.
So a Special Show next week.
After that, 4 weeks of another series I did a few years ago.
I need a leave of absence, but this Money series will continue come hell or high water.
Unless they take me away after this episode, lol!

ingratiates herself straight into our hearts with this latest Release called Ticket To The Moment. This album has it all. 12 Tracks of sheer heaven. Terry Holder has the voice of an angel and proves it in no uncertain terms. Long have we waited for a female singer of her magnitude. She moves easily through genres of Pop, Folk, and Americana with just a kiss from Country. Her expertise is quite astounding. The level of songwriting is superb, taking you the listener deep within the lyrics.

For those of you who have not yet heard Terry's voice, fasten your seatbelts. This lady has the ability to capture your imagination and attention from the first track to the last. Terry's soft, sultry vocal draws you in and lives within your soul. Just as easily, Terry can make your blood boil with excitement and the urge to dance.

Instrumentation is absolutely top notch. These veteran musicians have excelled in making this album incredible. They have showcased Terry Holder's vocals making her unforgettable. A finer match has never been made, perfectly suited for Terry. Production, recording, mixing, mastering and engineering is perfection in motion.

The Three Tracks I have singled out with much difficulty are :

1) In God's Eyes - Terry Holder has shown she can stand shoulder to shoulder with some of todays most elite female pop singers. Her style is unmistakable. This track, while pleasing to the ear, has a strong story line. You will be swept away by both the complexity and simplicity of it. One of our favorites of this incredible album.

2) Satellite - This is an upbeat song with a catchy melody, impeccable vocals and lyric. It's the kind of song you will find yourself singing in your mind as you go about your day. You hear it half way and already you've been zapped into the Terry Holder Zone! One of our most requested tracks. Instrumentation will astound you!

3) Turn The Car Back Around - Prepare to be swept into a frenzy of chair dancing with this one. Terry turns it up a notch and takes you on a ride. Terry Holder rocks it country style, taking us on a journey into this story. Her vocals hold you hostage till the last note. Instrumentation is brilliant.Her gift of delivering spectacular music is not missed on this one. See for yourself.

*** Special Mention*** When Will I Be Loved - Cover Terry Holder is one of the few women who does justice to this memorable song. She nails it. Give it a listen and see for yourself.

While these three tracks are magnificent, they are not at all the only excellent tracks on this album. In fact, I could single each and every track out.

It is a rare thing when an artist is this generous on one album. Ticket To The Moment is filled from cover to cover with songs you will feel connected to. This is one of "those" albums. You know the ones I mean. The kind you still pull out 20 years later. It will stand the test of time. It is one of THE best albums I have heard this year. Do yourself a favor, grab it today.

John Batdorf and Michael McLean - Arlene Kole and the Koles - at Kulaks Woodshed, Sat 2/6/10

I was very impressed by the live show put on by Arlene Kole and the Koles this past Sat evening. I already knew that John Batdorf (and Michael McLean) were hugely impressed by their music and, as many people know, my taste in quality independent music runs toward the type of music John likes. In fact, in many cases, John Batdorf is the bar to which an artist is raised when I'm looking to take an artist on for my social media management work. And I already knew that John was very impressed by Arlene Kole and the Koles.

So I was looking forward to this show. First of all, there is always magic in the room when Michael McLean - Johns' good friend and writing partner - joins a show with John. It is always as plain as the huge smile on Michaels' face as he accompanies John on piano or guitar. Plus Michael has the gift of verbal story and turn of phrase that precedes a song that they've authored together, leading in perfectly to the song itself. Out of all the duos that John Batdorf has performed as part of, I love seeing John and Michael performing together the best. So that was a huge star of the evening for me. A sorely-needed inspirational star, peppered with live songs that prior to this, I'd only heard on CD. When accompanied and backed-up by Michaels' piano or guitar, Johns' vocals just soar and they reach and they goal.

The other very equal star of the evening was Arlene Kole and the Koles. I love live music and I don't get out as often as I'd like; but I've seen a lot of acts perform at the various conferences and I used to host an open mic and coffeehouse weekend gigs. I love seeing a professional and polished act, and though several of my favorites are practiced, they don't sometimes know what they will perform when they reach the stage. Some - even though they are excellent nonetheless - aren't necessarily practiced - they just wing it when they reach the stage. Whatever works for an individual, as long as they are tuned and not flat (and remember 98% of their lyrics) is fine with me.

It is, therefore, an extra special performance when the band or singer/songwriter is out to give you the best performance they can and they plan and practice beforehand. So I can especially appreciate a well-planned act. This is what I saw all evening ....

This was the first time I'd seen Arlene Kole and the Koles perform live and I hope to catch them again very soon (and to advise that others do the same). They are as comfortable together as well-loved worn bluejeans - they're enjoying their own performance and each other - they're loving giving the music to the audience. They are fresh and different, shiny and new, professional and practiced to perfection. The harmonies are knockout. The solo vocals are excellent. The guitar work is precise but performed with emotion. They are a well-oiled cohesive unit comprised of four very talented and spirited individuals. Become a fan - listen to the music - go see a show soon - you will not regret it!

There was a lot of love in the room last evening - I was very glad to be there.

Friends on the Internet

A good ten years or more ago, I was introduced to an online diary/journal called LiveJournal. I'd been involved in online fandom and one of my friends from a fandom yahoogroup led me into LJ. Before long, I'd found a long-lost friend under a pseudonym on LJ, and then I started to keep my own Journal there - and when it was offered, paid the $25.00 for a lifetime membership.

That long-lost friend and I don't communicate much anymore (but we did meet - twice!) but we're both still friends on each others' journals; I keep up with whats' going on in her life and I'm pretty sure she does the same with me. One or two others I knew from YahooGroups are also friends on my journal for the same amount of time. One of them (Joanne) lives in Australia; she's a sporadic poster but when she does post, she posts in spurts. The other one (Natlet/Jes) has migrated (half-heartedly - I still mostly keep in touch with her via LJ - to Twitter and Facebook - and of course we're friends on those sites as well). Along the way via these three people I met others who became hard and fast friends ... all of whom have made the jump to other social media ... Jaime/Smittygirl (and via Smittygirl I met Carol/LadyDiva and Kelpie), Kirstin (who I met via an LJ group and we became friends because she and I have the exact same thoughts about how to treat humans of celebrity status), CJ, Danielle/theHunter (who, I believe, I also met via Smittygirl because of the A-Team). I keep a locked journal because over there - when I'm talking - I'm talking about things dear to my heart that I prefer to only share with a few that I trust. It's just my way. Most of these people are friended on my locked and private Myspace, and they have all migrated to Facebook. A few are on Twitter too.

Via CJ and theHunter, I started reading Neil Gaiman's journal. For those who have no clue who he is - where have you been? He's an author of books that have been classified as children's books although his books cross all genres and age-brackets. Over the years that I've been reading his journal, he's become more and more recognized by the public at large; his books are being made into movies; he's getting many awards ... hell, he recently won the coveted Newbury Award, joining in the ranks with the likes of Madeleine L'Engle. How cool is that? Very cool.

Through it all, though, he's remained amazingly human and those of us who read his journal look forward to his posts. All of us are animal lovers (Natlet convinced me to keep Sambuka back when he was still a VERY lively kitten and driving me batty even though I loved him to death) as is Neil Gaiman. We've followed his stories of the various cats who have lived/do live in his house and yard as well as the dog who adopted him and visa versa - the dog was a runaway for good reason, Neil found him, found where he was from and offered to adopt him and now we're all treated to wonderful pictures of a white German Shepard on walks through the woods near where the author lives.

All of us got to know the two elderly cats who lived in the library - and when one of them passed away, we knew the other wasn't going to be far behind. And we learned about this little blind cat named Zoe who lived in an attic bedroom. Within the last week or so, Zoe became ill and it was found that she had a major tumor in her esophagus ... we all lived traumatically through each post of Neils' (and the other people who knew and loved Zoe as well) until she was finally put down (at home!!) today. Every single one of those posts from the last five days or so had me in tears. And I found out earlier today, I wasn't the only one. Kirstin, on her facebook, commented about crying (and I had just wiped my eyes from reading the previous post). From that I realized two things. One is that I have this solid pocket of friends - some of whom who have migrated to other social media sites where I hang out and do business - some of whom I have met, some of whom I have talked with on the phone and exchanged tapes of The A-Team or Crossing Over with John Edward. I called theHunter/Danielle when her horse had to be put down. Danielle/theHunter also saw Jes after Jes told me to "live it myself" and went off to live her life elsewhere ... she showed up on a bus in upstate NY where Danielle was attending college - and was seen not once but twice!). I'm pretty sure I've been on the phone with Jes/Natlet at least once if not twice. I *almost* met Smits/Jaime when I went to the Memphis Folk Alliance conference about three years ago and I'm pretty sure we will meet someday - for now, we have talked on the phone and shared a ghost. I've talked with Carol/Ladydiva on the phone myriads of times (we both went into retail around the same time; if retail meant survival then survive we must!). Kelpie and I are fast friends; she also maintains my website and does design work for me as and when AND we ARE going to meet next month (which I'm very excited about). I've met - several times - CJ. Joanne and I have shared a storyline.

I'm pretty sure all of us follow Neil Gaimans' journal and I'm pretty sure all of us as animal lovers have all been reacting exactly the same way as Kirsten and myself. (I also cried when Kirstens' sisters cat, Simon, has to be put down. She worked really hard to save this cat and it didn't work out).

The story of the last days of a cat that affected all of us starts with this post on Neils' journal. You can follow along from there till today just to see why this author that we know from his journal and his friends and the people who work for him were affected by this little cat. In a strange way it brought all of my small group of online friends together ... and I wonder whether you won't start reading Neils' posts and/or read a book or two of his.

It's sorta a little bit of what the internet is all about.

"That Don't Seem Right To Me"

Note from John Batdorf: When this song was born, child of a bluesy lick that attached itself surgically to my musical brain, I was thinking about ALL the things in this world that just “don’t seem right to me”. While collaborating on this tune with Michael McLean, we came up with enough thoughts to fill a twenty minute song and though we didn’t actually know how to fix all the things that were bugging us we were amazed at how the list just grew and grew.

Then it dawned on me. Maybe YOU would like to add to the list with your own special lyrics about things that don’t seem right to you. So, consider this an official invitation to add your songwriting genius to an extended version of THAT DON’T SEEM RIGHT TO ME ... and you.

AND, to make this more fun, I thought we could make this a contest to add another verse to the song that once it captures you, you’ll be singing it not just in the shower, but EVERYWHERE.

SO, if you’re game, do this:

-John will record "That Don't Seem Right to Me" with the new verse included and will send it to the winning contestant
-The "new" version will be added to Johns' ReverbNation and Myspace accounts for a limited period of 3 weeks.

Judging will take place between Thanksgiving and New Years' 2010 as follows:
Initially John Batdorf and Michael McLean will review all verses submitted and whittle it down to up to no more than 3 finalists.

John will record each of the verses separately and those verses will be included in a single tunepak for submitting to all the fans.

Fan-voting will follow and the winner will be announced on New Years' Day 2010!

My new solo CD, Old Man Dreamin', is done and will be off to manufacturing as soon as Wednesday. It all started last May, June and July when I went on a writing spree. I started recording the CD last November and finished the last mix last Tuesday, May 5th. The CD is mixed!!!!

And it is now in the process of being mastered.

After mastering comes putting an eye-pleasing/catching package together and then printing. We will all get to hear the finished product pretty soon. The creative process will be done and the business of selling the record becomes a reality. This is the time when the musician - in this case, John - tours the product so more people can hear it. I know that everyone who already loves Johns' music will love this CD. Everyone who has heard the unfinished product, so far, has called it the best thing John has ever done. And that's priceless considering that everything John has ever done throughout his career has been stellar; so we know that now we have something that goes above and beyond awesome. Plus it's timely; everybody who hears it will get it ... but first they have to hear it.

The music business, as you all know, has changed dramatically from the days when a record was produced by a studio who have their sales and publicity people in line to get the music to the magazines and radio stations that make or break a record. Just like the fact that John recorded this one in his own home studio and hired out for other stellar musicians to sing and play on it? Now he has to hire out for just-as-stellar publicists and radio-promoters to put these songs on the map. It costs bills with a lot of zeroes to put a half or full page ad into magazines like Rolling Stone and American Songwriter ... it takes clout to get a musician recognized and a record reviewed in either of those and other known music publications. It takes a radio promoter with a track record to get a musicians' music heard and charted on major radio stations cross-country. It takes showing that we're serious about marketing this CD widely for above level booking agents and managers to be interested in representing a musician and his work.

John has a large loyal following of fans. I know all of you are waiting to hear this record. Here's the catch though - All of you are extremely important to John but he didn't make this record just to be heard by his loyal following. He made it for everybody to hear; and everything on this record is especially timely.

One more time we are asking for help -- this time to get the professionals on board who will help us break this record out the way it deserves to be.

Back From The Dead

It has been quite an adventure since my last update. About three weeks ago, as musicians and singers were lined up to add their special something, my computer began to act up. The song files were getting quite large but up until that point, everything had been running just great. I couldn’t get the song sequences to play without slowing down or stopping, so I had to think of something fast. Not to panic, I used a stereo rough mix of the song and started a whole new mini file which enabled me to add all of the new parts without taxing my computer. I would just figure out what was wrong after I got everybody recorded. After a long week of overdubs, I tried to figure out what the heck had happened to my sessions and no matter what I did, the problem persisted. It was like one of my processors had gone south and the computer couldn’t keep up. I did all the tests and the computer was fine. I then checked for any kind of virus or corruption and everything was clean. I tried talking to music software techs and nothing helped. I then called my buddy/composer, Steve Bauman, who basically has the same gear as me and together, we can usually get things worked out. Not this time! I had a few ideas left and tried them. I went to a newer version of Digital Performer, thinking that my software had somehow gone bad but that didn’t work either and caused a whole new set of problems. The new software was trying to analyze the song data and was trying to time-correct it as it was loading which was a really bad idea. I had one more trick up my sleeve which usually solves everything. I purchased a new hard drive and did a clean install of everything and held my breath as we booted up. Things got worse. When we opened up a song, each individual track played with its’ own tempo and none of them played together. Now I was beginning to get panicked. What if the data somehow was ruined and the last five months of work was lost? Steve (Bauman) had an idea. He owned a more powerful Mac than the one we were having problems with and offered it to me to see if that would solve the problem. I had to install everything into his computer and once everything was loaded, we opened up a song. It played perfectly!!!!! I had already lost over a week of mix time and called David Appelt, the mixing engineer, and we have been mixing now for eight straight days and have just started mixing our sixth song. I haven’t been tested like this since my first disaster night of mixing the music for 'Promised Land' where everything that could go wrong did. I ended up working all night and walked into the session at eight o’clock the next morning with the music completed. Sometimes I feel that the powers that be test all of us at times to see how we all handle severe adversities. It was like I was having too much fun and had to be slapped upside the head one more time as a reminder of just how lucky I am to be making such a cool new record. I know it sounds a little out there but you are talking to a songwriter and I still haven’t figured out where those magical ideas come from. I know that surviving that horrid week will make me stronger and will make me appreciate the project even more when it’s done.

To date, all of the recording is over with unless Timothy B. Schmidt decides to sing on a song. He hasn’t said yes yet, but he is leaving the door open just a crack. I would like to thank singers George Merrill, Dan Navarro, Gary Falcone, Andrea Robinson, Lily Wilson, Harry Stinson, Matt Batdorf, Bill Batstone, James Lee Stanley, Michael McLean, and Steve Bauman for their efforts. I’d also like to thank musicians Greg Leisz, Michael Dowdle, James Harrah, Phil Parlapiano, Kevin Dukes, Tom Walsh, Bill Batstone, Luke Halpin, Mark Browne, and Fred Sokol for their wonderful performances. Also thanks to David Appelt and Steve Bauman for their awesome tech help. Last but not least, I want to thank each and every one of you who have contributed and made it possible to make this CD. We still have to raise money for mastering, manufacturing, professional promotion and advertising so everyone can hear this music.

I will send a pre-mastered mix of "What D'ya Got?" to all new contributors to the project who donate upwards of $100.00**; AND if you love it, I would greatly appreciate it if you could do two things:

John has already privately thanked each and every individual and organization who has contributed to the making of the new CD, "Old Man Dreamin'". John would also like to publicly thank each individual and organization in order of contribution as follows: John and Donna McTernan, Tom Greuling, Douglas West, Jim Weiss, Paul H Mannes, Jeff Ferguson, Kelpie Powers, RMJ Productions, Mother Hen Promotions, Russ & Julie Paris, Bruce Hackett, Charlette and Phil Fuggetta, David Platt, Steve Smith, David Schoolman, Jeff Robertson, Joseph Cooper, Stan Little, Sigi Nagys, Pierre and Leigh Marchal, Mark Tamashiro, Michael McLean, Kevin Hains, Ilene Reinhart, Meet Me In the Music, Hollie Ashworth.

Many things have been accomplished on this CD to date, including drums via Tom Walsh, vocals from Bill Batstone, Andrea Robinson, Matt Batdorf, and George Merrill. All of the acoustic guitars are done as are all of Johns' own vocals. Phil Parlapiano played accordion, Mark Browne and Bill Batstone played bass, and Michael Dowdle added electric, acoustic guitars and mandolin. John has also added some dobro and other instrumental overdubs as well.

The production aspects of the CD keep moving forward:

Yesterday (Friday, 4/3/09), John added fiddle, mandolin, and vocals with Gary Falcone.

Monday (4/6), more vocals with hopefully Dan Navarro and Lily Wilson

Tuesday (4/7), electric guitar overdubs with James Harrah,

and Wednesday (4/8), pedal steel and lap steel with Greg Leizs.

From that point forward, John will be going through the ODs and getting everything in its place before David Appelt will begin the mix process which normally runs 1 to 2 songs per day so we are looking at another week. After that will come the mix review and fix process in preparation for mastering. The final CD is almost within our grasp but we still need lots of help and contributions to get it done.

Money-wise, the above work will cost around $6,000. plus another $2,000. for manufacturing and $3-5,000. for print magazine ads and professional radio promotion. These amounts may be daunting in total but individually, we can all make a difference; remember that this CD belongs to all of us as contributors as much as it does to John, as creator/producer and artist.

In addition to the awards that have already been offered up till now (reiterated below for your reference), John would now also like to offer a pre-mastered full song mix with every $100.00 contribution going forward. If you are interested in trying to get together a contribution co-op with your friends, please email rmjprod@gmail.com to get another copy of the co-op letter for your use.

Batdorf CD Update

Hey guys!

The CD is progressing nicely. I am now in the "add drums" part of the process. Tom Walsh will be providing that instrument. I am still waiting for two singers that are sick to sing backgrounds on the CD. All the acoustic guitars are done and so are my vocals. Bill Batstone, Andrea Robinson, Matt Batdorf, George Merrill, and Lily Wilson are all singing or will be singing soon. Phil Parlapiano played accordion, Mark Browne and Bill Batstone played bass, and Michael Dowdle has added electric, acoustic guitars and mandolin. I have some dobro and a few other instrumental overdubs to do and that will be that.

For those who have been so generous to support, I have just sent them an mp3 comp of the earliest demo of three new songs with me just throwing out random lyrics mixed with melodic "do dos" for reference. That demo cross fades about half way through right into the latest version of the song which still isn't mixed or finished but I thought that this might show how the song writing/producing process goes. This is a part of the making of a CD that very few people that aren’t directly involved rarely hear. I hope you enjoy this. It’s something I have shared with only a few before! It’s kind of like seeing someone who has always looked great in the past, and now you are getting your first glimpse of them with bad morning hair and before make up!

We are still trying to raise additional funds and I again want to personally thank those of you who already have supported this project!

Johns New 2009 CD - My Early Review

As John said to me yesterday - when I went to his studio to listen to 10 out of 12 new songs that he is working on for his new CD - the finances of our country and our world are pretty much shaken to its roots and people are only spending when they have to. As we all know - it's not going to get better before it hits rock bottom and then it can only go up from there.

BUT. There is music. And where there is music, there is hope and inspiration. Music is one of those aids that buoys us up from rock bottom and holds us there till there is hope on the horizon.

It is - and always has been - music that has lifted our spirits and inspired us to keep our head above water to move forward and get us through our days. This is actually truer for me, who discovered Johns' music right after ALL WOOD AND STONES was released. "I Will Not Be Afraid" and "It's Not Heavy" are still at the top of my list of favorite JB songs. Both of those songs got me through some pretty rough times, and still do so to this day.

With that said - after having listened to the rough cuts (i.e. Johns' vocals and guitars are all recorded and each song awaits further "outside" work) of these 10 songs - I am literally blown away. No, seriously. Most of you have heard me say this before with each of Johns' previous CD's in recent years. But I mean it now more than ever. This CD comes completely and totally from John; a good percentage of the lyrics, the ideas for the songs, the music, thoughts, and opinions. Oh, yes - opinions. In this record John bares his soul and his thoughts via his music. Johns' music has always been cutting edge; he has always sought to create new and innovative (and difficult to play live) guitar licks, but he has surpassed himself yet once more ... I think this record is a culmination of everything he has experienced and learned via the music industry since his own beginnings. While the songs he wrote as a 16-17-18-19 year-old were brilliant and cutting-edge for someone so young (and each of those songs still hold water -- for us as his fans and John as the musician/creator -- to this day) -- these new songs give a whole new meaning to the phrase "cutting edge" and could only have been written from his point-of-view today. The songs are not written from the point of view of someone who knew without really knowing and hit the nail on the head -- that was the brilliance of the young John Batdorf in the 1970s ... THESE songs are written from the point of view of the John Batdorf in 2008 and 2009 - who has spent his life doing what he loves and is writing about it from this end of the spectrum, from the point of view of someone who has lived and loved and worked hard and is here to sing about it. All the songs are full of knowledge and conviction and truth as well as love and inspiration and survival.

All of you here are going to LOVE this CD -- from how he plays it to how he sings it to what he has to say. There are love songs because one thing that Johns' music has always been about right from the get-go, is love. And these love songs speak about love in a way he hasn't spoken about it before. Two of the songs give me goose bumps every time I hear them and both of them should really be love themes for some grand big screen big budget movies. There's comedy on this record, there's comments on this record and there's loads of inspiration; inspiration being the other thing that Johns' music has always been about.

There's one song on this record that I once heard - accidentally - about 2 years ago. It was an early version but the minute I heard it, I burst into tears and it has done the same to me ever since, in whatever form I've heard it. It will finally be released to Johns' listening public on this CD and it, too, is a VERY powerful song (and I'm speaking from memory since it's not one of the 10 I heard today). In point of fact - every song on this CD is very powerful - and there's one song that's hit-material: it's got a riff that will knock your boots off, it's opinionated without insulting anyone, it's catchy, it's a love song, and it's powerfully strong!

EVERY song on this CD is a very powerful song whether it's inspirational, thought-provoking, or about love. Every song is pure John Batdorf in his vocals, in his music, in his riffs, in the little things he adds to a song ... and there are parts still to be added. But with Johns' blessing, I wanted to let you - Johns' core fans - know about the impending release of this CD now - to whet your musical appetite for it - to give you something to wait for - to cheer John on while he works on it further - to tell everyone you know who might appreciate it - to think of ways to help us get this one heard by an even wider public than ever before. THIS CD is Johns' next level...

Myspace as an internet tool

So, I initially started this blog, "Thoughts From Mom Hen" as a place to write about my social media experiences on the internet and how it can help musicians. I was initially intending to write about Facebook, but then I realised that aside from my own very small "real life friend" community on LiveJournal since May 2001, Myspace is really the very first business-related online outlet (besides email and YahooGroups) I have worked via.

In the last few weeks, on various mailing-lists, I've seen musicians and others within the music-community commenting on how they don't "get" myspace as a networking tool.

Well, first, I'd Iike to designate the web-presences I think every musician should have -- whether he/she works these places themselves or has someone do it for them (note that I've linked my own sites as follows except where a specific site was not applicable) -- a Website, a Myspace, a Facebook, a ReverbNation, a Twitter, a SonicBids, and an Airplay Direct account. Each of these accounts serve completely different purposes but all work together to aid in furthering a musicians' career as much as possible online ("online" being a large portion of the pie that works toward servicing your career). I'll discuss each one of these in the weeks and months to come as I get time.

Myspace is an awesome online tool IF properly worked. Your myspace should function together with your officlal website and should look somewhat alike (and each of these web-presences should refer to each other). Your website -by the way- should be easily manuevered by any visitor; your website is your professional internet calling card. Your myspace is one step beyond "internet calling card". It allows visitors to view -- on one page -- your present day career in perhaps a more "hip" fashion than your "calling card website" giving visitors the opportunity to listen to up to 6 snippets or complete present-day songs, see a compact list of your upcoming appearances, your bio, a photo slideshow, and perhaps other little widget-like creatures that show your other web-presences or loyalties or locate where your fans are, etc. Yes, you can do all this with a website BUT what you can do with a myspace that you can't do with a website is to take this interactive web-presence and send it to others who are also members of this community in a "friend-request".

Please note that friend-requesting is not fun and is very time consuming BUT there IS a method to the madness of sitting in front of the computer for up to 2-3 hours at a time and clicking other peoples' sites and asking them to consider you as an internet "friend".

First, find another musician or radio station or venue or what-have-you that is complimentary to you and maybe one step further up the status chain, and use their friends' list to start "friending" from. If your music is similar, it's a good bet that the folks who are fans on that site will like your music too. They might not really become your true-fan but you never really know unless you try. If you've been in the business awhile, perhaps they heard of you once upon a time ... if you're a newbie, perhaps they will like your sound. But myspace -- as a business tool -- really isn't for finding new fans (although it doesn't hurt -- friending for fans specifically works well if you use the Myspace search engine and plug in particulars like age range and however many miles from a specific zip code/venue to search out and friend people who might want to come see you).

Myspace, as a business tool, in my experience, is about finding other business: venues, house concerts, radio stations, podcasts, booking agents, and any other music-business-related services.

Here is where others think that Myspace fails: they send a friend request to a radio station or house concert. Said radio station or house concert accepts their friend request within a certain amount of hours or days, and aside from maybe a "thank you" comment from either end, neither person ever hears from the other again. In this scenario, you each become a statistic and neither helps the other except to count as one more friend. It's nice to have a lot of myspace friends; it's even nicer to have actual contact with many of those friends.

A failure to connect is not a Myspace-failing. Myspace is only the conveyor belt. The failure to connect or follow-up is yours. Only once in a very long while will a DJ or venue operator write back the day after a friend request and say "Wow! I want to hire you for a forthcoming gig!" or "I want to play you on my station!" It happens - I've seen it; but not often enough where it's the norm. The norm is that -- as with any other contact you make in your life, whether on the internet or in person -- you need to keep note of who you send friend requests to and then follow-up.

This - in my experience - is how Myspace can work for you. It's not the be-all and end-all of web-presences; it's just an important piece of the same internet pie that becomes a part of your online-support-toolbox.

And yeah - you're going to come across people on myspace -- as you will on the rest of the internet and the world as a whole -- who are spammers or who are disturbed and lonely and looking for love in all the wrong places. Myspace has account choices in place to cut down on these types of people contacting you. And if they still manage to get through, you can block and report them to the powers that be. Yes, there really are tech-people behind the guise of Tom on Myspace who will hear your complaint and act on it if it is actionable.

Now - please note that this is Myspace as a marketing tool from the point of view of someone who works Myspace on behalf of Musicians. I would bet that the experience is slightly different from the view of Venues, Radio, Booking Agents, and other Music Services. If so, we would love to hear from you!
